Welcome to my world! The stereotypical perception of older people- grannies! - is rife in the casting scene, despite the fact that for some time, celebrities of a certain age are being lauded on the catwalk and elsewhere.
Send in a self-tape that highlights you unique qualities and flair: that will get you the role for Mothers Day ad: oops, we wanted a GRANDMOTHER!
I have two agents: they get it and are ‘working on it’! Thankfully one company saw the light and took me on. It paid well. Fingers crossed for more enlightened choices and an WORK!
Congrats to you, Maryjane. I worked my way up to a print producer for advertising in 1999, at the age of 47. Casting women over 50 was just starting to gain some traction, though it was far from mainstream. The creatives at the advertising agencies were starting to grumble. They were tired of seeing the same handful of “senior models” again and again and needed fresh faces.
So, I did what any self-respecting producer would do: I started street casting for older models. I was on a mission to find real women and that’s how Modernager Casting was born.
And now, of course, the business is flooded with the same exceptionally gorgeous women who left their careers because, at some point, they were told they were “aged out.” And now they’re back, more polished than ever, still exuding that unattainable beauty. The beauty industry still hasn’t quite figured out how to truly embrace aging, no matter how much they say they have.
We have the models do their own hair and makeup which must be natural so we see the real women. That’s what we’re known for. Even our half drag portraits show faces that are only half made up, hence the name of the project.
You're hot as hell, Maryjane! FCK EM. Keep at it knowing you're swimming upstream and you'll change minds along the way, I'm sure.
FCK EM. Business has picked up now that I have gotten one helluva rep! We'll show em real! XXX

Completely agree! So these samples are exactly that ... not THAT real. I love what you do!

Uplifting and well written. I love this especially the humor and laughter, this is the very best tonic.
